Fredrick 520

7-31-10 Buffalo, Namibia- Near the Caprivi of Namibia, a panhandle that leads toward Victoria Falls, we are introduced to Fredrick Alpers. He and Daniel had met several years back in South Africa at a conference for Biodiversity and remained in correspondence. Presently, Fredrick is a conservationist living in the Bwabwatu National Park of Namibia.. He is presently engaged in a variety of environomental and social initiatives. Among them, he enthusiastically speaks about the concept of members of the San community living and patroling within the National park. This is a pilot project within the continent, really, as attempts of preserving the land and wildlife has often meant removing people from it. In this case, the San are employed to monitor the patterns of wildlife and the environment. As they are incredible trackers, they are also citizen patrolmen and work against the poaching of elephant and other wildlife within their park. It seems quite a marvelous solutions. This livilihood, although not their native livilihood of hunting and gathering seems to suit them, as they are incredibly adept at tracking.
